What is Hypoglycemia?

Hypoglycemia is a medical condition when the blood sugar in your body is so low that it does not have enough sugar to use as a fuel.

Generally, the condition hypoglycemia happens in diabetes but can happen for some other reasons also like:

  1. Medication
  2. Exercise
  3. Medical conditions
  4. Diet

What are the Symptoms of Hypoglycemia?

When the sugar level in body goes below 70 milligrams per deciliter, the symptoms of hypoglycemia begins to develop. Few of the symptoms are:

  1. Hunger
  2. Confusion
  3. Headaches
  4. Irritation
  5. Trembling
  6. Heart Pounding
  7. Sweating
  8. Anxiety and nervousness
  9. Shaking of body parts
  10. Weakness
  11. Lack of concentration
  12. Passing out
  13. Nightmares or trouble-sleeping
  14. Coma in extreme cases

Causes of Hypoglycemia

Not always diabetes causes hypoglycemia, as many times life-style habits, skipping foods or bad eating habits can also cause it to happen or accelerate it.  Other factors causing this are:

  1. Drinking alcohol without eating any food
  2. Taking more insulin then the carbohydrates you take
  3. Eating a meal that has a lot of sugars
  4. Not eating at regular interval or eating a diet later than usual

Treatment of Hypoglycemia

Have a protein or energy bar before bed time if you feel the symptoms of low blood sugar. Avoid taking too much insulin after having carbohydrates or sugar diet.
