Achal Kumar Jyoti or Jyoti is the Chief Election Commission of India who succeeded Naseem Jaid. He was appointed as the CEC on 6 July, 2017 and is the 21st CEC of India so far.

Achal Kumar Jyoti was the former chief secretary of Gujrat when Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the chief minister. The 64-year-old former chief secretary of Gujrat was a 1975-batch of IAS and got retired as Gujrat chief secretary in January 2013. Achal Kumar had joined the three member panel of poll on 8 May, 2015.

Achal Kumar was born on 23 January, 1953 to Kishore Chand Jyoti who was Chief Staff Officer in New Delhi Army Head Quarter. His mother was a house wife. He had two brothers and one sister and was the youngest of all the siblings. He had ancestral home in Jalandhar and had all his education in Delhi.

According to the law,  an Election Commissioner can have a tenure of six years or can serve till the age of 65 years, whichever is earlier. Since Jyoti is already 64-year-old, so would have a tenure of nearly seven months as CEC only.

Jyoti had served on many managing roles between 1999 to 2004 before achieving this prestigious role. He also served as the Gujarat vigilance commissioner, managing director of Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Ltd. and revenue and water supply departments in Gujarat.
