What is the Meaning of ‘Bharat Mata’?

Word ‘Bharat Mata’ is derived from Sanskrit language that means ‘Bharatamba’. Bharat means India, and Amba means ‘Mata’ means mother.

‘Bharat Mata’ is one of the best iconic painting made by the great painter Abanindranath Tagore. He made this painting in the year 1905.

This is to mention here that Abanindranath Tagore was the nephew of Rabindranath Tagore who was a great poet and whose write-ups is still read by today’s generation.

In the painting, ‘Bharat Mata’, a woman is shown with four hands carrying different items in her hands. He made this painting during Swadeshi Movement to boycott the British goods. What are the four things in four hands of ‘Bharat Mata’

  1. Vedas in First Hand:

    One hand is holding the Vedas witnessing the strong education and literature of India. Vedas depict the ancient culture of India. Vedas are written in Vedic Sanskrit and are the oldest scriptures in India’s history. There are four Vedas: Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samveda and Atharveda.

  2. Rice Paddy Hand in second hand:

    The second hand of Bharat Mata holds the rice paddy depicting the rich food of India’s land. It shows the fertility and productivity of India’s agricultural land. Mother India never leaves any of its child hungry. Also, every child of Mother India takes care of her and give her full respect.

  3. Rudraksha in Third Hand: 

    The third hand of Bharat Mata is holding a Rudraksha Mala referring to beads of salvation. Rudraksha plays very important role in Hindi religion. They are said to cure most of the physical and psychological issues.

    There are 14 types of rudraksha depending upon the mouths  ranging from 1 mouth to 14 mouth rudraksha. A rudraksha mala made up of 108 beads is considered auspicious for success and prosperity.

    140 beaded rudraksha mala is for courage, strength and good health. 32 beads mala is good for money, wealth and long life. 16 beads mala is worn in hinds. There are different types of rudraksha mala depending upon the number of beads it posses.

  4. White Cloth in Fourth Hand:

    The fourth hand holds a white cloth referring to peace. It shows that India is a peace loving country but can go to any extend for the sake of integrity and respect for Motherland.

This is one of the best painting of all the time depicting the real nature of Mother India.
