Genetically Modified Foods – Safety Issues

GM Food

Genetically Modified is the type of food that is not natural and whose DNA has been scientifically modified for better results. The DNA changes is a special technique that is done by exposing them to chemicals and radiations to inhibit those properties that it lacks naturally. As a result of the process, the results food is more healthy, longer shelf life and less prone to diseases as per the claims.

It was in 1946 when for the first time scientists discovered that DNA can be transferred between organisms. Since then different experiments have been conducted on plants or animals. The first genetically modified (GM) plant was produced in 1983, using an antibiotic-resistant tobacco plant. China was the first country to commercialize a transgenic crop in the early 1990s with the introduction of virus resistant tobacco. In 1994, the transgenic ‘Flavour Saver tomato’ was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for marketing in the USA. The modification allowed the tomato to delay ripening after picking.

Safety Issues with Genetically Modified Food

Since a genetically modified food is made by altering the natural food, so the safety issue is always a matter of concern with it. Many people condemn GM food by calling it “Frankenfoods”. Normally, a GM food has a texture and some additional appearance or feature that the natural form lacks.

For example, a GM apple can be pink or have some additional anti-browning gene that can terrify consumers.

There are two types of communities split in society: one that prefers GM food and the other that avoids it. To make their life easier, a grocery shop normally keeps both the type of foods in different sections with plabellinginglling their type.  The GM food is made by combining genes from different organisms. Few examples of such “Transgenic” food is soybeans, corn, cotton etc.

For so long, no solid proof has been found that claims that GM food is not fit for consumption. Many might have allergies to a specific food but this is also true that GM food brings some of the definutrientstsrients ana da  add a feature to the existing food. Papaya and Banana which get spoiled easily that affected their business, have been able to stay for long when their genes were altered with GM technology.

Conclusion: Every technology has its pros and cons. GM food brings befoodod by altering its genes with others. If something good is happening without compromising the quality, and also if it improves business, nothing is wrong. Genetically Modified food is not unsafea  a from a consumption point of view and one can have it easily.
