“Hicky’s Bengal Gazette” First English Asian Newsletter

To the surprise of many people, the first ever English newspaper was Hicky’s Bengal Gazette.

It was the first newspaper published in Asia and was published for two years I,e 1780 and 1782.

Hicky’s Bengal Gazettewas published in Kolkata which was earlier known as Calcutta.

Who Founded ‘Hicky’s Bengal Gazette’

Hicky’s Bengal Gazette newsletter was founded by James Augustus Hicky. He was a an Irishman who even spent two years in jail for debt. The newspaper brought many issues against the Administration of Governer General Warren Hastings.
