Who was Kamini Roy?

Kamini Roy was a Bengali Port and a social reformer who was born on 12 October 1864, when Indian was under British rule.

Kamini Roy was far ahead of her time and  fought for many causes in her time. She was also the first woman graduate in British India. Thinking of a girl’s education at that time was just next to impossible.

Early Life of Kamini Roy

Kamini Roy was born on 12 October 1864 in a small village of Bengal presidency. The village Basanda was in the Bakergunj District of Bengal Presidency. But now, this village is in the Barisal District of Bangladesh.

Achievements of Kamini Roya

Kamini became the first women who earned a degree in Bachler of Arts with honours in Sanksriti. She did her college education from the University of Calcutta in 1886. Later she became teacher also in the same University.

Kamini Roy encouraged other writers and poets of her time to pursue their dreams. For this she visited Barisal and encouraged one of the young budding poet, Sufia Kamal to continue with her passion of writing. 

She herself was influenced by the work of renowned poet Rabindranath Tagore. She was honored with many awards and honors of her time; one of which was Jagattarini Gold Medal by Calcutta University

Her famous quote was, “Why should a woman be confined to home and denied her rightful place in society?”

Death of Kamini Roy

She died on 27 September 1933. Kamini Roy lost her husband in 1909 and after that she went into immense grief and pain. His husband’s death left her deeply affected and created a hole in her life. This could be seen in her work post the death.
