Who is the 14th President of India?

Ram Nath Kovind is the 14th President of India who won this seat by heavy voting on July 20 in the President elections held on July 17. He is the successor to Pranab Mukherjee who had been a successful president and took many steps of reformation in society.

Ram Nath Kovind was nominated as the ruling NDA dalit candidate. He was the first choice of Prime Minister, Narender Modi. He was a Member in Parliament, Rajya Sabha from 1994 to 2006. Kovind was the 35th Governor of Bihar from 2015 to 2017.

Early Life of Ram Nath Kovind

Kovind was born on 1 October, 1945 in Paraukh village in the Kanpur Dehar district, Uttar Pradesh. He belongs to a dalit community and his father was a landless Kori.

Ram Nath Kovind had five brothers and two sisters and youngest of all his siblings. They had a poor upbrining and had a small house made of mud that collapsed eventually.

He did his bachelor degree from DAV college, affiliated to Kanpur University.

Political Career of Ram Nath Kovind

  1. Ram Nath Kovind is a commerce graduate from Kanpur University.
  2. Ram Nath attempted for civil services and cleared the exams also in the third attempt. But he did not join as was not selected for IAS. As a result he started practicing law.
  3. In 1971, Ram Nath enrolled in bar council of Delhi as an advocate.
  4. Before joining politics, Kovind has practiced in Delhi High Court and the Supreme Court of India till 1993 for 16 years.
  5. He was a Central government advocate in Delhi High Court from 1977 to 1979. And, a Central government standing counsel in the Supreme Court of India from 1980 to 1993.

Political Career of Ram Nath Kovind

  1. Ram Nath Kovind joined BJP in the year 1991 as a President of Dalit Morcha of BJP.
  2. Kovind has a proven record in politics and headed the BJPs Morcha successfully between 1998 to 2002.
  3. Kovind had an ancestral house in Derapur which he donated to RSS.
  4. He was elected as the Rajya Sabha Member from Uttar Pradesh. He also represented India in the United States and addressed the United Nations Assembly in October, 2002.
  5. He served for Welfare of Scheduled Castes/Tribes, Home Affairs, Petroleum and Natural Gas, Law and Justice, Social Justice and Empowerment.
  6. He has had a great role in the development in the field of education in rural areas and also helped in constructing schools for the dalit and poor family children in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
  7. He has even made many foreign trips to countries like, Thailand, Nepal, Singapore, Pakistan, France, Switzerland, Unites States and United Kingdom.
