Girija Devi, was one of the foundational figures of Banaras and Senia gharana. She was credited to bring out the thumris mostly sung in the courts and kothas.

Early Life of Girija Devi

Devi was born to an upper class family of Zamindars on 8 May, 1929. She married to a business in 1946 and started working for All India Radio, Allahabad after her marriage.

She was in love with music and passion for it since her childhood.

Girija Devi gave her services as a faculty member of the ITC Sangeet Research Academy and in Banarash Hindu University during the early 1990s

Death of Girija Devi

Girija Devi, famously  known as “Queen of Thumri” died at the age of 88 years on 26 October, 2017 in Kolkatta.

She complained of the heart pain and was admitted in BM Birla Hospital in Kolkatta but died hours later. Girija was also called “Appa ji” lovingly by many and survived by a daughter.

Awards and Recognition to Girija Devi

  • The legendary singer, Girija Devi was awarded with “Padma Shri” in 1972
  • Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1977
  • She was given “Padma Bhushan” in 1989
  • Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship in 2010
  • Maha Sangeet Samman Award in 2012
  • GiMA Lifetime Achievement Awards in 2012
  • She was also awarded with “Padma Vibhushan” in 2016
