Thyroid- Diagnosis and Cure with Lifestyle Change

thyroid

Lot of people are being diagnosed with a thyroid disorder that is making their life miserable. Many times people are not aware of this disorder but still suffering from it. Sometimes, the test reports also do not bring a clear picture.

It is always important to get the actual reports and diagnosis of the disease so that that you can get the proper medical care for it.

What is Thyroid?

Thyroid is a small butterfly-shaped gland located in the lower part of our neck. It produces two hormones:
1. Triodothyronine (T3)
2. Thyroxine (T4)
These hormones control the metabolism of our body, and also control energy generation, moods swings in our body. When our body stops producing thyroid hormones in sufficient quantities, the condition is called hypothyroidism. On the other hand, if our body creates extra hormones, the condition is called hyperthyroidism.

It is important to have both hypothyroidism treatment and hyperthyroidism treatment on right time is very important, as otherwise, the symptoms may accelerate and the condition worsens.

My Struggle with Thyroid (Hypothyroidism)

My encounter with Thyroid happened in the year 2011 after feeling those symptoms that I never face. Swollen face, sinking eyes, weight gain but stamina loss, joint pains and feeling cold most of the times were earlier symptoms that I started getting before being diagnosed with Thyroid. Even though I had started the above symptoms 2-3 years before but never gave them attention.

This might be because we women always keep our health on stake but show so much care towards in our family. When the things went beyond my control and I was not able to do even little household chores then I realised the time has come! The time has come to visit my doctor otherwise, it will be never.

Doctors have normally sixth sense and can judge a disease by just looking at the patient. When I visited my doctor, without wasting any time she asked me to get thyroid tests done. Before that, I had never thought that this disease could ever affect me. Last time when I heard about it was in school in the classes of Biology :).

Leave all, when my reports came I saw I got the feeling of the school report card. I had got failed in three subjects, TSH, T3 and T4. I had got the highest ranking in TSH which was 143. A normal TSH should not be more than 5. I showed the reports to the doctor and to no surprise, she put me on lifetime medication dose starting with 100mcg.

I was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism and put on medication that would be lifelong as per the Allopathy. I could not see myself addicted to this and thought to change my lifestyle. I started doing morning walk but that made my joint pains more severe. This is when I thought of yoga.

I started waking up at 4 o’clock in the morning and after having, shower went to an open area in the park. There would do light exercises followed by pranayama. Breathing exercises are no doubt the best for inner stamina. Heavy exercises can make you fit from outside but to make inner body more fit, one should do yoga and breathing exercises

I still remember when everyone would sleep in the house, I would go to do exercise in the morning followed by yoga. I started getting better results with it and felt little more energised. A lot of black coughs came out of my throat which had accumulated inside my lungs.

My two fingers of right hand had also stopped working, which were now freely moving in all the directions. This happened with yoga only.

I also changed my food habit and started taking more lighter and liquid food. In the morning I would make daliya or porridge. Around 11 o’clock I would have papaya fruit and 1 o’clock had lunch. In lunch, I used to have more protein-rich pulses and 2 chappatis. I increased the quantity of water intake in a day. Before diagnosing with thyroid, I often complained about constipation but now I was not feeling any such problem. I started taking more salad and fruits in my diet

One more thing that I included in my life was the use of coconut oil. Coconut oil has got many benefits and is low in cholesterol also. Try to include raw coconut as it has more added advantage than the cooked one.

How Does Yoga Help me in Thyroid?

As mentioned above, yoga helped in increasing my body stamina from inside out and also made my mind more calm and peaceful. It no doubts changed my life and made me fitter than ever.

Earlier I would get upset or think a lot for any problem but now I had become more compose and calm with yoga. I could do better time management and give equal time to all the tasks without getting tired.

We already have written an article on how to start yoga without getting its side effects.
