It’s a matter of pride again to India, that 24-year-old Bajrangi Punia won first  gold at 18th Asian games. These Asian games are being held in Jakarta.

Who is Bajrang Punia?

Bajrang Punia hails from Khudan village of Jhajjar district in Haryana, India on 26 February, 1994. 

Bajrang started wrestling at the age of seven. Family of Punia shifted to Sonipat to attend Sports Authority of India to support him.

Bajrang Punia had no money to take up sports like cricket or badminton, which required expensive equipment. Children in his town loved free-hand sports such as kabaddi and wrestling, and the ‘akhara’ (wrestling field) was quite popular there.

He is an Indian freestyle wrestler and is currently ranked number 2 in the 65 kg weight category.

Balwan Singh Punia-Bajrang Father Role

Bajrang Punia’s father Balwan Singh himself was a wrestler and in his youth, Bajrang would often run away from school to watch wrestlers wrestle. Bajrang Punia said, “I didn’t even know when it became a part of me.”

His father encouraged him to take wrestling as a profession.

Bajrang Punia won World Championship-2022

Veteran Indian wrestler Bajrang Punia on Sunday won a bronze medal in men’s 65kg on the final day of the 2022 World Wrestling Championships held in Belgrade, Serbia. He was suffering with an injury still was able to win the medal.

Wrestling with a bandage on his head, Bajrang Punia made an impressive debut against Puerto Rico’s Sebastian Rivera, a Pan-American Championship silver medalist. This match was very exciting.

In the final match Bajrang Punia was trailing 8-9 in the last minute of the bronze medal match. But the Tokyo 2020 bronze medalist didn’t give up and stunned Sebastian Rivera with a two-point takedown in the final 20 seconds to turn the match 10-9 in his favor.

With this, this was Bajrang Punia’s fourth medal at the World Championships. Punia had earlier won silver in the year 2018 and bronze in 2013 and 2019.

Commonwealth Games 2022, Wrestling: Bajrang Punia won India’s first gold medal in wrestling

Indian wrestler Bajrang Punia won India’s first gold medal by defeating Lachlan McNeil of Canada in the men’s 65kg final. In the match played on Mat B of Coventry Arena Wrestling, the Indian veteran defeated Canada’s McNeil by a margin of 9-2.

Earlier, veteran Indian wrestler Bajrang Punia had made it to the Round of 16 by defeating Nauru wrestler Lou Bingham 4-0 by a by-fall in the men’s 65kg weight category.

India Wrestler Bajrang Punia Record

Bajrang Punia is the only Indian wrestler so far in today’s date who has won three medals at the World Wrestling Championship.

Bajrangi won gold medal in 65 kg category by over Japan’s Takatani Daichi over 11-18.

Bajrangi had earlier won silver in Incheon Asian games held four years back.
