December 23 – Kisan Diwas (Farmer’s Day) India

Every year, India celebrates December 23 as Kisan Diwas (National Farmers Day)  to commemorate the birth anniversary of Chaudhary Charan Singh who was the fifth Prime Minister of Independent India and had a huge benevolence for farmers, the Annadata. After the death of Chaudhary Charan Singh, his memorial in New Delhi was named, Kisan Ghat.

 

Chaudhary Charan Singh would always say that the way to the prosperity of a nation goes through the farms and agriculture. According to him, a nation can never progress if there is any corruption in a nation.  Chaudhary Charan Singh served as the Prime Minister of India between 28 July 1979 to 14 January 1980. He introduced many policies for the welfare of farmers in India. Being born in a jat peasant family, Choudhary Charan Singh could easily feel the root problems faced by the farmers.

How is Kisan Day Celebrated?

Kisan day is celebrated on 23 December with many programs and seminars nationwide. These programs are organized at district or block levels. The first Kisan diwas was observed in 2001 on 23rd December and since then it is celebrated every year.
