Mahatama Jyotirao Phule – Life, Education and English Love

Jyotiba Phule who is still known as Mahatama Jyotiba Rao Phule was a social reformer who worked against the persisted caste system in society. He was a writer and a progressive thinker also ahead of his time.

His father, Govindro had a dream since childhood that his son Jyotiba should study a lot. Jyotiba Phule was a very brilliant student in his childhood.

His teacher Vinayak Rao Joshi wanted him to send to Church of Scotland school for higher studies. Let’s know more about Jyotirao Phule.

Early life of Jyotirao Phule

Jyotirao Govindrao Phule was born in Pune in 1827 to a family that belonged to the Mali caste. Mali means, they would grow fruits and vegetables in their fields. His father name was Govindrao Phule, and mother name was Chimnabai. Chimnabai had died before he could turn one year.

He had one elder brother and would help his father in the fields. He got married at the age of 13 to a girl of his Mali community only.

Education of Jyotirao Phule

Jyotiba had got admission in the Church of Scotland Mission school also but his relatives did not like this. They did not want him to study in a English medium school. They started critisizing him and his father, Govindrao.

The result of this was Jyotiba had to leave his studies and left the school. He was just nine years old that time and had to start helping his father in the fields. This had made them both disappointed.

Jyotirao Phule Incident of English

Munshi Gaffar Baig had a huge influence on the father of Jyotirao. Once he rached to Govindrao house when he was out for work in his fields. Jyotirao was at home to whom Munshi Gaffar asked if he wanted to study further. To which Jyotirao answered yes ofcourse, surely would study.

Munshi Gaffar said something in they ears of Jyotirao and asked him to play and act in front of his father. Jyotirao went to the fields and told his father Govindrao that he wanted to study in a good English school. The father asked who had taught him this, to which he said no one.

Munshi Gaffar Baig was standing at some distance and smiling. Govindrao understood everything and asked Jyotirao why he wanted to go in a English school when he is good in Marathi.

Jyoti Rao said all his Brahmin friends go to English medium school and he also wanted to learn English as later is the language of future.

Govindrao had to surrender himself to the will of his son, and let Jyotirao take admission in English medium school. This small kid became Mahatama Jyotirao Phule who worked for the reformation and the betterment of the society later.

Death of Mahatama Jyotirao Phule

Mahatama Jyotirao Phule died on 28 November 1890.
