What is Tulsi Vivah तुलसी विवाह क्या है

It is believed that, on the day of Devshayani Ekadashi of Ashadha Shukla Paksha, Shri Hari Vishnu remains absorbed in yoga nidra for four months and wakes up on the day of Devuthani Ekadashi of Kartik month. Since the Lord Vishnu wakes up from Yoga Nidra on this day, so all auspicious work starts from this day onwards.

As per mythological beliefs, when the Lord Vishnu awakes there there is a tradition of getting Tulsi ji married with the Shilagram avatar.

Worship method of Tulsi Vivah तुलसी विवाह की पूजन विधि

Tulsi marriage is organized on the day of Devotthan Ekadashi which normally falls in the month of Kartik as per Hindu Calendar.

  1. Make a seat for Tulsi Ji and Shaligram together and place their idols
  2. Decorate a sugarcane pavilion around this and set up a kalash
  3. First of all perform worship of Kalash and Gauri Maa
  4. After this offer incense, lamp, clothes, garland, flowers to Mata Tulsi and Lord Shaligram
  5. Offer makeup and a red chunari to Tulsi ji
  6. After this recite Tulsi Mangashtak and worship the couple
  7. Take seven rounds of the Tulsi Ji with Shaligram ji idol and asana in hand

According to one famous legend, there was a very powerful demon named Jalandhar. He was very cruel, and the gods and goddesses used to be very troubled by his terror.

On the contrary his wife Vrinda was a very virtuous woman. She would worship a lot and due to its effect no one was able to defeat her husband in any war.

Vrinda was an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu. It was her devotion towards the god that would always make Jalandhar victorious in every battle. One day he attacked heaven. All the gods got upset and went to the shelter of Shri Hari and requested him to find a solution.

Lord Vishnu knew that it is impossible to defeat Jalandhar without breaking Vrinda’s devotion. Srihari assumed the form of Jalandhar and Vrinda’s piety religion was broken. At that time Jalandhar was fighting with the gods. As soon as Vrinda’s virtuous religion was destroyed, all the powers of Jalandhar ended and he was killed in the war. Vrinda later realized this deceit of Lord Vishnu, then she got angry and cursed Srihari.

When Vrinda realised that Lord Vishnu has broken her chastity she cursed him to get the separation from his wife would also be abducted by deceit, and also he would turn into a stone. As a result he turned into a stone which is called Shaligram.

It is believed that due to the curse only Lord Vishnu took an avatar as Shri Ram and he had to suffer the separation from his wife Sita in Tretayuga.

Vrinda could not bear the death of her husband and got sati. It is a beliefe that a plant came out of the ashed of Vrinda which Shri Lord Vishni gave a name “Tulsi”.

He declared that without Tulsi he would not accept any prasad and also he would marry Tulsi in Shaligram form. People would know this date of Tulsi Vivah with Shaligram as “Tulsi Vivah”. One who would conduct this marriage on this day, his married life would be filled with happiness and love, and he would get the same virtue as one gets by Kanyadaan.
