21-year-old Sanket Mahadev Sargar was the champion of Khelo India Youth Games 2020 and Khelo India University Games 2020.

Mohamed Anik of Lesia lifted defeated Sanket by pulling a total of 249 kg and made a win over Sanket and also created a new new sporting record in clean and jerk.

Anik lifted 107 kg in snatch and 142 kg in clean and jerk and won the gold medal. Whereas, Dilanka Isuru Kumara of Sri Lanka won the bronze medal by lifting 225 kg.

What Sanket Sargar said after winning the medal?

Sanket, who missed out on winning the gold medal by just one kg, said after winning the silver medal, “I dedicate my medal to the freedom fighters of India, who laid down their lives for the country’s independence.” It feels great to win a medal.

Further he added, “But I am also a little angry because I had to win the gold medal. I got injured in the second attempt, I have a hand injury and I was in a lot of pain during the match. Right now my goal is to recover from a hand injury. After that I will make my next target.”

India has been the best performer in weightlifting at the 1990, 2002 and 2018 Commonwealth Games and is the second most successful country in the history of Commonwealth Games with 126 medals in weightlifting.

Only Australia (159) has won more medals than India in the weightlifting event of these Commonwealth Games.

In the 2018 Commonwealth Games, India’s weightlifters dominated, winning nine medals including 5 gold.
