Every year “World Soil Day” is celebrated on 5th December.

Every year on 5 December, is celebrated as ‘World Soil Day‘ by the Food and Agriculture Organization to work towards reducing soil erosion due to increasing population.

Objective of World Soil Day

The main objective of celebrating World Soil Day is to make people educated to reduce soil erosion, and make them aware of fertile soil and sustainable management of soil as a resource. It is celebrated with an intention to safeguard the soil and encourage soil protection.

Like water is important for life similarly we cannot imagine life without soil, especially in countries where half of the population depend upon agriculture like India.

World Soil Day History

It was initiated under the leadership of the Kingdom of Thailand to educate people to understand the importance of soil. Soil plays an important role without which plants could not grow.

Historically speaking World Soil Day was conceived at the 68th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, held in New York on 20 December 2013.

Since then evert year it is celebrated worldwide on 5 December.

Human activities recently has encouraged the loss of soil due to cutting of trees and deforestation. The danger of soil erosion and soil loss is a threat to the environment and ecological system.
