Educational Qualification for UPSC Exams

Candidates interested for UPSC must possess a bachelor’s degree from a recognized university or institution. There is no specific requirement regarding the field of study or specialization.

You can apply for UPSC even though if you are studying from School of Open learning, Distance education, Part time. The only condition is that all these universities should be approved by United Grants Commission of India.

Age Limit for UPSC Exams

UPSC exams are held for IAS, IPS, IFS, IRS profiles. So, there are different age limits for these posts which vary according to the castes and other factors too like:

  • For the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and the Indian Police Service (IPS), the candidate’s age should be between 21 and 32 years as of August 1st of the examination year.
  • There are certain age relaxations for specific categories which is provided based on if the candidate is from SC/ST/OBC.
  • For other services like the Indian Foreign Service (IFS) and the Indian Revenue Service (IRS), the upper age limit is 32 years.
  • Certain categories, such as defense personnel, government servants, and disabled candidates, may have further age relaxations.

Nationality Eligibility for UPSC Exams

Candidates seeking to appear for UPSC must be either:

  • A citizen of India, or
  • Could be a subject of Nepal/Bhutan, or
  • A Tibetan refugee who came to India before January 1, 1962, with the intention of permanently settling in India, or
  • A person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia, and Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.

How Many Attempts One can Take in UPSC?

Like age, the number of attempts in UPSC also vary as per the categories too like:

  • 6General category candidates can attempt the UPSC exam a maximum of six times.
  • OBC candidates have a maximum of nine attempts.
  • SC/ST candidates have unlimited attempts until they reach the upper age limit.
